Steel and copper wire data sculpture

I wanted to make something intricate and delicate, yet at the same time metallic and industrial looking. I was inspired by the holes in Gego's wire meshes and the dynamic growth.

Materials

The modular aluminium wire linked and interlocked and the copper wire left a trail, a path through the breaks, the void. I like how in the photos the shadows give a sense of movement, freeze-frames of an animation.

The modules were locked together but the sculpture felt very free. The components are fixed, the whole is free. The balance between randomness and control is central to generative art in all it's forms. The difference in the process here though is instead of being an iterative process, it was a sequential one, one piece being added after another, like a random growth algorithm.
